Effect of radioactive materials on environmental health.

چکیده
In a recent discussion relating to environmental health, Mark D. Hollis (1) indicated that public health officials will be responslible for protecting the population against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiations result from the disintegration of unstable nuclei and are damaging to living tissue. The radiation may originate from an external source or from radioactive materials within the body. Radiation from an external source may affect the body as a whole, if there is no shielding, or may be made to affect only certain portions of the body, as in radium treatment of a tumor. Effects of damage from radioactive materials within the body depend on several factors: the quantity of radioactive material present in the body; the type of radiation, whether alpha, beta, or gamma; and the half-life or rate of decay of the material. Other factors to be considered are the organ or organs of localization; rate of excretion from the body, i. e., the biological half-life; the physical state of the individual; etc. All of these factors are considered in determining the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for each radioisotope

Radiological dose assessment of naturally occurring radioactive materials generated by the petroleum industry in wildlife: A case study of chinkaras of Lavan Island, Iran
Human activities such as oil and gas production can enhance the natural level of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in by-product and waste streams. Iran has been among the top five oil producing countries since 2005. This high production rate emphasizes the importance of NORM management to ensure the safety of humans and wildlife. Petroleum storage and transport facilities are lo...

Abstract: Although advances in science and technology has many benefits for human life, but it has significant disadvantages, too. The radioactive materials, nuclear energy and their use for non-human issues, hazardous wastes from various industries etc. are the major factors that can be serious threats to human health and modern fetuses’ health who are the next generation of earth habitants. I...
متن کاملEnvironmental radiation and the lung
Environmental sources of radioactive materials and their relation to lung doses and lung burdens are described. The approaches used and the problems encountered in estimating lung doses are illustrated. Exposure to radon daughter products is contrasted to exposure to plutonium as particular examples of the hazards associated with radioactive materials of different chemical and physical characte...
متن کاملRemoval of cesium through adsorption from aqueous solutions: a systematic review
Cesium radioactive isotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) are dangerous to human health due to their long half-life and high solubility in water. Nuclear experiments, wars, and nuclear plant accidents have been the main sources of Cs release into the environment. In recent years, several methods have been introduced for the elimination of Cs radioactive isotopes from contaminated wate...

Background: The Ural region is highlighted among other Russian regions for its unfavorable radiation situation and complexity of the overall environmental situation. The source of man-made radioactive contamination is the work of the "Mayak" Production Association. A significant radioactive contamination has happened as a result of several radiation incidents in the early period ...
